How to Make Positive Change Inevitable

February 23, 2007 Motivation

Sometimes people go through life struggling to make a positive change. They focus a lot of energy, and get very small results. Other times, people are able to make massive change with seemingly little dedication.

Take learning to read as an example.

When you were in elementary school it was nearly inevitable that you were going to learn to read. Very few people can learn to read on their own, no matter how hard they try…but if put in school, they almost inevitably learn to read!

If you had wanted to learn to read, you could have spent hours poring over books every day. You could have spent years attempting to decipher letters. You could have become obsessed with it. Dedicated your life to learning to read all by yourself. And maybe you would’ve made a little bit of progress.

All that effort would have been amazing. But wouldn’t it have been so much easier to learn to read in school?

In my adult life, I have struggled with learning many things. Learning can be difficult. Taking action can be difficult. But, there have been times when certain things became both inevitable and easy.

In college, learning was easy. It was inevitable. All I had to do was show up for class, and my mind would be expanded.

Why? Because I was in the correct environment for learning.

If you want to plant a tree, it will only grow in certain conditions. You have to put it where there is soil, and sun. And once it is there, you need to give it water. Certainly, you could hire engineers and figure out a way to grow trees in truly bizarre environments. Or you could simply find the proper location to grow a tree.

Too many people struggle because they are growing their life in the wrong environment. And then, even if these people become dedicated and motivated, they end up failing because they are not in an environment that matches their goals.

If you want to make real change in your life, stop fooling around and change your environmnent.

The simplest way to massively improve your life is to change your environment.

Fortunately, you have control over that.

And even if you don’t want to massively change your environment, you can give yourself small changes that make a big difference.

Just like a tree in a desert, you can grow with enough water. Either go where the water is, or bring it to you.

Read books. Surround yourself with passionate people. Ask yourself what you want, then look for simple changes in your environment that could make your goals easier to achieve.

Positive change doesn’t have to be hard. Change you environment and you make it inevitable.
