Why Systems Make Focus Easy

Focus is a requirement to success. Success is not an accident, and in order to achieve it, you need to focus.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of factors that make focus difficult.

One of them is your environment.

Think about it this way: When you start focusing, you begin to move.

For example, if I focus on getting a glass of water, I’ll probably go to the sink! But if there are no glasses to use, my focus will be diverted because I would need to find a glass to use.

Your environment can either support your focus or divert it. It is inevitable that environtmental factors will work to distract you from your goals.

Too many times, I have focused my energy on making dinner, but ended up washing all my dishes instead of eating. I usually still make dinner, but that is only because I was able to maintain my focus while dealing with the detour required by my environmnent(washing the dishes!).

Your environment can also force you to focus. For example, a school environment constantly reinforces your focus on learning.

A school, by the way, is a great example of a powerful system. A school is a group of teachers conspiring to educate a group of students in an organized way, following certain standards and procedures. If you go to school, you are harnessing the power of a system to achieve your goals.

One of the most powerful ways to stay focused is to turn your environment into a system that requires focus.

If you do not have such a system, the first thing you should focus on is creating that system.

In my personal life, I am focusing on becoming a successful entrepeneur. In order to achieve this, I am beginning to create new habits. I have recently begun getting up at 5am every morning. I have given myself no choice: I will get up at 5 in the morning. This allows me to be alone in a quiet environment ideal for learning. In order to make sure that I get up at this time, I told the person I sleep with about my plans. I set my alarm. Both of those things changed my environment in ways that make it easier to achieve getting up at 5 am.

Throughout most of the day, however, I have been struggling to maintain focus. That is because I do not have proper systems in place that I can harness to maintain focus.

One of my systems is my internet marketing business. It makes me money whether or not I focus. However, there are several specific ways I can work on it that will cause me to make even more money. Because it is a system, it runs on its own, and does not require very much focus to accelerate.

Another system I am trying to build is a learning system. This blog is part of that system. My goal is to read at least one book a week, and get as much out of it as possible. Getting up at 5am is part of my system of learning. Another part is writing about what I learn on this blog. There are more components I could add to this system that would make it even easier for me to achieve focus. One thing I could do is find a way to get people to automatically respond to what I am learning from the books I read. Because my learning system already has a blog, there is an opening for a new component to my learning system. I should find a way to harness my blog to get feedback. Pretty simple, eh?
