I’m looking forward to reading your entire piece. All the best, Louis Wasser (Lou) In the end do I need to “follow trends” to build an audience rather than writing the stories that I enjoy doing and which also entertain me? That is a great question. Personally, I’ve been down the path of trying to “follow trends” and I can say that I don’t recommend it, for a number of reasons. I strongly believe that our audience building efforts should be meaningful to both sides of the audience relationship – which means the author should find the work meaningful, as well as the audience. Sometimes this does mean changing what you’re doing, in order to align with what the audience responds to. However, this can also mean changing what you’re doing, in order to align with your own needs as a writer. People in your audience want to have a strong sense of who you are as a person. The more you can develop and communicate your personal identity, the easier it is for people to be loyal to you. At the same time, the more you enjoy what you’re doing, the easier it will be to sustain your audience building efforts in the long run. You’ll also have a lot more fun at the same time. I talk about some of these ideas in the second chapter – I hope you find it valuable! And let me know if you have more questions.
